COPING WITH PAIN

After a decade of experience treating patients suffering from pain disorders, I would like to make some suggestions in coping with this most unpleasant experience.

Keep all  doctors appointments.  Depending on the condition, it can take some time for a patient to get relief.  Patience is not easy when you are in pain.

Be honest with your doctor about how you feel.  We really are here to help you.

Take your pain medications as directed.  Most medications are supposed to be taken with food. Check with the pharmacist about when and how to take your medications.

Do not take more pain medication than prescribed, many conditions such as nerve pain do not respond well to pain medication.

Tell your Physician all medications you are taking, including over the counter medications and supplements.

Do not take more medication than prescribed, as it will likely not provide you with more relief and can put your health in danger.

Eat well, and take care of your overall health.  A healthy body heals better and sooner.

Engage in activities you are permitted to, and do not do anything your doctor has recommended you don't.  It's ok if you don't get to every household chore.

Keep up with family and friends

Find activities and forms of relaxation you can do—DVD's, music, hobbies.

Unfortunately, there is sometimes no quick fix for pain conditions

I have often told patients " you are going to be uncomfortable whether you sit home or go to dinner, so if possible try to do something enjoyable."

Continue working whenever possible, as permitted by your Physician

Try to keep your life as normal as possible—and think positive! Things Will Get Better. I can almost promise you that—and I hope I'm there to hear you say, " I feel much better".  That makes my job worthwhile.
